History

This wiki was originally created in 2001 by Niklas Gustavsson of www.protocol7.com, and ran on PHP-Wiki. Many community members contributed to it, and it became a storehouse of much SVG wisdom. In 2003, it came under the attack of spammers, and often much of the content was auto-replaced by off-topic links. Steps were taken to secure the wiki using a password scheme, but this proved to be largely ineffective. The wiki fell into disuse, and was not maintained.

In 2004, Antoine Quint took over control of the wiki, moving it to www.svg.org. It was restored to its original content, but little new content was added. To be frank, 2003-2004 was a bit of a fallow period for SVG, with many of the most prominent community members drifting away.

In 2005, however, SVG had grown quite a bit, and new demand was realized for the wiki. One of the original contributors, Doug Schepers, undertook the task of restoring it, and converting it to the more secure format of MediaWiki. Because of many problems with the automatic transition between formats, much of the content was converted manually. This personal attention highlighted some major problems with the content. Many of the links were dead; much of the information was outdated; and the basic structure of the wiki was not conducive to finding information that you did not already know. During this period of flux, it was be hosted at Schepers' SVG site, www.SVG-Whiz.com. Even now, the wiki is undergoing restructuring and updating.

While the original wiki was focused only on content-developer resources (such as scripting and building WebApps), the new wiki is intended to be a resource for other SVG users, including artists and designers, viewer implementors, and anyone else interested in Scalable Vector Graphics. By bringing all these users together, the community will understand the each others' needs, strengthening SVG.

The current admins of the SVG-Wiki are Doug Schepers and Antoine Quint, and can be reached at wiki@svg.org. It is hosted by kevc.
